Relaxing does not always mean doing absolutely nothing or spending all day in silence. Sometimes, you simply want to slow down without falling asleep.
This leaves plenty of room for fun and relaxing activities worth trying, especially those that are interesting and entertaining while still being easygoing.
Build Something That Has Instructions
Creative activity is usually a source of joy. Coming up with something can be rather exhausting, though.
A construction set of any kind solves this problem. There are all the elements you will need to use. Also, there is already some idea of where the result should be directed.
You will have to put everything together.
It takes enough effort to focus on the process, while watching the appearance of something new is a bonus.
And if you suddenly realize that one piece should have been used in a different place fifteen steps ago, you have solved the mystery of a separate puzzle.
Play a Game Where Nobody Really Cares Who Wins
A competition is a different thing when nobody cares about victory.
Choose a board game, a card game, trivia game, some casual video game, or a cooperative game without demanding winners.
In this case, the right choice will depend on those who are going to play the game.
Some companies can change a simple card game into a serious game of international diplomacy. Others can play many times without winning and enjoy the process.
Also, this approach will suit solo gamers. In this case, one should select a game that will be easy to play and finish whenever you decide.
It does not matter if it will be possible to continue your progress in it. Some games do not require much effort from gamers.
They are interesting for one or two rounds.
Create Something New for You – Fun and Relaxing Things to Do
There is a huge difference between working on a project related to some of your hobbies and creating something new.
The second option is accompanied by more difficulties.
Make candles, origami, cookies, a small painting, a miniature, simple jewelry, or use some of the craft tutorials that are completely new for you.
Select the thing that can be started with things that are already at home.
It can be perfect. It can also be completely different from the sample that inspired you to create it.
However, it gives you an opportunity to figure out how something works, which is much more interesting than getting a perfect result.
Make the Process of Cooking More Experimental
A dinner should be ready at some particular time. This is not a rule when you are experimenting.
Take the recipe for something that seems to be interesting. Try to make homemade pizza with interesting toppings. Bake many kinds of cookies. Create your own sandwiches. Cook pasta or try to cook some of your favorite dishes in a new way.
You can also make the process more interesting by inviting others for a tasting.
The main idea is that nobody is waiting for the cooking process to be finished, which makes cooking more fun when dinner does not depend on it.
Visit an Unknown Place and Enjoy Exploring It
Exploring does not require visiting faraway places. Just find some areas you are not familiar with and visit them.
One can go to a flea market, a bookstore, an antique shop, a food market, a small museum, a garden, or a new neighborhood where you can always walk without visiting anything.
Do not research this place thoroughly before the visit.
People have a strange habit of investigating a new place before visiting it, reading reviews, seeing the photos, and choosing the menu in advance. Knowing the opening hours is necessary. However, knowing what there is on the third shelf inside the store can be unnecessary.
Just let some of the surprises happen.
Make Photography a Small Challenge
Photography becomes more interesting when you set some restrictions for yourself.
Find five things of one color. Take photos of reflections. Find interesting shadows. Take photos of ordinary things but using special angles. Take photos of all the things you meet on a short walk.
The phone is enough for taking photos.
The challenge makes you concentrate more.
For example, even the street where you walk many times can offer many interesting shapes, textures, and other details.
There is no need to post these photos afterwards.
They are just the evidence that you have noticed something.
Create Your Own Tasting Menu
One does not need a formal tasting menu to taste something.
Just take several versions of something that you like and taste them. They can be chocolate, coffee, tea, cheese, fruits, hot sauces, cookies, strange soft drinks, or even snacks.
Cover the labels if you want to make this activity more interesting.
Thus, one will see how sure one is of identifying the things that he or she has eaten for many years.
One can find a new favorite or can understand that the expensive version was sitting on the other side of the table.
Either way, one will get some interesting topic to discuss.
Try a Playful Experience on the Internet
The internet offers many entertaining options outside games and social networks.
Interactive art, digital sandboxes, virtual drives, map experiments, drawing toys, music toys, browser simulations, and other small web experiences are perfect examples. The main thing about this type of activity is just trying something new.
Just move something, create something, explore something, manipulate something, make a terrible drawing and delete it.
You do not necessarily need points to make the interaction interesting.
Sometimes, it is enough to have curiosity.
Have a Ridiculously Specific Movie Evening
Choosing a movie takes almost as much time as watching it.
Having a strangely specific rule will help to make the process easier and the evening more entertaining.
You can watch a movie from the year of your birth, something set in a city that you would like to visit, something with a really long title, or something where you will see an actor whose recent work is all you know.
You can set any rule here. If you are with somebody, just let everybody name one possibility and pick it randomly.
The rule is enough to give your evening some character without an elaborate plan.
Learn One Completely Unnecessary Skill
Not all skills one learns should be useful for his or her career.
One can learn a simple card trick, how to shuffle cards correctly, how to juggle with three objects, how to say a few words in a language he or she likes, how to draw a simple cartoon animal, how to identify a few constellations, or how to fold a flying paper airplane.
Keep the goal very small.
You are not starting a six-month educational program here.
You are just trying to find out if you are able to do something today that you could not do yesterday.
Even if one never uses this skill, it will not cost anything.
Let Others Choose What to Do
Sometimes, it is not an activity that is problematic. It is the process of choosing one of them.
If you spend time with someone, take turns choosing the activities. Put the possible choices into a bowl and draw one, roll a die, use a random selector, etc. Everybody gets one veto and accepts the decision.
The decision itself becomes part of the fun.
This approach works very well when everyone keeps saying that they are ready to do anything and rejects every suggestion.
Randomness has no patience for this problem.
Relaxation Can Remain Playful
The common point between the things that are fun and relaxing to do is that they are not necessarily quiet. Some of them can involve talking, competition, movement, experimenting, laughing, etc.
What they do not have is unnecessary pressure.
You can build something without mastering it. You can play without worrying about the results. You can explore without having a schedule. You can make something without showing it to anyone.
Select the activity that seems to be enjoyable before asking if it is useful.
Free time is one of the few things in the day that does not have to be useful.
